Let’s take a drive across the Belize River aboard a hand crank ferry to this very amazing modern community called Spanish lookout. Established around 1958, it is a well-developed and fast-growing town in the Cayo District. The citizens of this community speak Plautdietsch (low German with Dutch influence meaning flat or low” (referring to the plains of northern Germany), and the name Dietsch corresponds etymologically to Dutch Duits and German Deutsch (both meaning “German”),most also speak English and Spanish. It is largely an agricultural community with some light industry such as furniture making, prefabricated wood houses, find best ice-cream and the only oil field production in Belize. The Mennonite community plays an important role in the Belize economy, they produce products such as grains, vegetables, cattle, poultry, and dairy products. After spending some time and learning the history of the Mennonite community and having a taste of the Mennonite Belizean Cuisine, we would move on to something different and adventurous.
As we make our way to one of the best birding spots, starting with a drive, through the rolling hills of this wonderful community, enjoying the picturesque view of the Spanish lookout. The area consists, miles of developed open Savannah, and farmlands used for cattle grazing and agricultural products, such as corn and red kidney beans. Driving for a few more minutes we then enter a sub-tropical forest reserve.
Having several different habitats in the area, it makes a perfect birding destination for Yellow rumpled warblers, white-tailed kites, laughing falcon, fly-catchers, and more.
