Overview
Welcome to Xunantunich Maya Site, located on the outskirts of San Jose Succotz Village. Xunantunich is a combination of Mopan and Yucatec Maya languages. It’s less than one mile above the rushing waters of the Mopan River, overlooking the Belize River valley.
It’s the second tallest man-made structure in Belize. This massive multi-complex building served as a dwelling, a shrine, and an administrative hub for the elite rulers. The eastern and western summit of “El Castillo” has large stucco friezes with carved elements that primarily represent astronomical symbols.
Tour is a half-day tour that starts as early as 8:00 am and returns to town around 1:00 pm. Drive time to Xunantunich twenty minutes from San Ignacio Town on the George Price Highway and stops at the village of San Jose Succotz. First of all, to get across, we board a hand-cranked ferry, which would get everyone across the Mopan River, and then the drive continues, one mile to the site.
